The Grand Initiation

  Gunilla & Ros
Help!  My sea legs are not growing fast enough.  My leap of faith in joining a sailing crew with no real open water experience was put to the test on the first leg of the journey.  Leaving Stenungsund, Sweden, our captain forewarned us of high winds, blistering cold rain, and rough seas on our six hour crossing to Skagen, Denmark.  Until last night, I thought I was impervious to seasickness.  I was wrong.  I am humbled.  I was in good company.

Beautiful and Pristine Gothenburg, Sweden

Gothenburg Waterfront

According to Wikipedia, "Gothenburg is the second-largest city in Sweden (after Stockholm) and the fifth-largest in the Nordic countries
The City of Gothenburg was founded in 1621 by King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden. It lies by the sea at the mouth of Göta Älv—the river running through the city—and is the largest seaport in the Nordic countries.[3]
Gothenburg is also home to many students, as the city includes both the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of TechnologyVolvo Cars was founded in Gothenburg in 1927."

Marina down the street from Gunilla's home.
Gothenburg, Sweden

After a good nights sleep, we ventured out on foot and explored the water front area within a short walking distance of Gunilla's home.  Lunch at the marina was a combination of sunny cool skies, nice breezes and fantastic fish.  I'm pleasantly surprised with the quality of photos taken with my Canon G11 Point & Shoot camera.  Tomorrow we provision the boat and set sail.

The Passion Within Ourselves - JUST DO IT

The outpouring of support, encouragement, excitement and envy from friends and family, and even a few strangers, has been incredible.  I lost count of the number of people, who when hearing of my plans to join a sailing crew on a  circumnavigation voyage, remarked to the effect that I was one lucky lady and they could never be able to do such a thing.  Poppycock, luck has nothing to do with it.  I realize family responsibility and the financial obligations of everyday life are obstacles to an indulgence of this magnitude but I also believe each of us is responsible for our own destiny and the choices we make along the way .

The comment, “I could never be able to do such as thing” is not giving yourself much credit.  Our days on this earth are numbered so choose to live them fully.  Embrace life, enjoy life and experience life.  Whatever your passion, be it travel, artistic expression, lifelong education, home renovation, growing your own food, fostering needy children or homeless animals, or anything else, JUST DO IT.  You will be glad you did.  Your endeavor might entail planning, compromise, and lots of hard work.  At the end of the day (or your life) when it is all said and done, there will be few doubts that the payoff of self satisfaction will be enormous.  JUST DO IT..
For those of you who are living vicariously through me, I hope I will not disappoint and my personal journey will inspire you to start living the life you are meant to have and deserve.  JUST DO IT.
Sincerely Susan
P.S.  I made it safe and sound and tired to Sweden.  Let the games begin.  Cast off in approximately 48 hours.

You know the journey is going to be brutal when you are tired before you board the first flight.
